About Civic Ground
Civic Ground is a reference site dedicated to explaining how democratic governments, civic institutions, and public policy actually work — in plain English, without partisan slant.
There is no shortage of political commentary. What is harder to find is clear, factual explanation: how a bill becomes law, what separation of powers means in practice, how local governments are structured, or what role NGOs play in civil society. That is the gap Civic Ground aims to fill.
Our approach
Every article on Civic Ground is written to be useful to someone who wants to understand a civic topic, not to persuade them to a political position. We explain mechanisms, not outcomes. We describe institutions as they are designed, note where practice differs from theory, and point to the tensions built into democratic systems without taking sides in those tensions.
Political systems are genuinely complex. Reasonable people disagree about what government should do, even when they agree on how it works. Civic Ground addresses the “how it works” question and leaves the normative debates to readers.
What we cover
Our articles cover the legislative process, the structure of courts and the judiciary, the electoral system, local and federal government, civil liberties, public policy formation, civic participation, the role of a free press, and the broader social structures in which government operates. We also cover media literacy and the role of public opinion in democratic life.
Who we are
Civic Ground is an independent publication. We have no political affiliation, no party backing, and no ideological agenda. We do not accept advertising from political campaigns or advocacy organisations.
